Jobboard Finder’s opinion

Summary: CareerBuilder was founded by Robert J. McGovern in 1995 as NetStart Inc. It sold software to companies so that they could list job offers. Now, it is a well-known job board present in many different countries. In Canada, it attracts a steady 373 210 visits per month. On social media, the site has 83 909 followers on LinkedIn, 383 638 on Facebook and 205 000 on Twitter (all of the social media is shared with the US). The familiar logo and design create brand unity across borders, attracting both jobseekers and recruiters. There are four different headquarters around the world. Some of the pages are available in English and French for Canada.

Design: The search engine (keywords and location) appears over a backdrop of golden trees (as if to reflect the Canadian ambiance). The featured companies lead to completely different pages (and they aren’t necessarily hiring). Furthermore, the blog page doesn’t exist (you have to press on resources at the top of the page). Once in the job listing, the offers can be sorted by relevance, location, company, title or date. The UX design is top notch, making for an elegant page for the job listing. There are logos, publication dates and the type of hours visible before even opening the offers. You can also refine the search with filters (date posted, job type, category, state, city, the company name).

The job board objective: Thanks to a global presence, CareerBuilder helps recruiters find candidates all over the world.

Recruiter observations: If you already have an account on a CareerBuilder website, you cannot create a new one. Otherwise, it’s easy to create an account. You can purchase job offers and access to the CV database online.

Jobseeker observations: It’s easy to create an account. If you are redirected, the site asks for your e-mail address.

The job offers: There are currently 5 134 jobs online. The categories with the most job offers are Other, IT and Customer Service.

Reactivity: The team answers very quickly.

Special features: The timeline (in the “About us” section); the cute error page; the talent network (which is a list of companies with logos, categorised by industry. However, the pages are unavailable); the career advice (blog).

Verdict: In Canada, CareerBuilder has a strong presence and an attractive design. If you want to find companies in a specific industry, the listing is helpful. It’s also easy to order job slots and access to the CV database. Improved filters would be nice (so that the jobs don't end up in "other" by default).
