Jobboard Finder’s opinion

Summary: Created in 2010, “Kaggle provides cutting-edge data science, faster and better than most people ever thought possible”, according to the LinkedIn profile. Indeed, far more than just a job board, Kaggle is a network of data science enthusiasts, offering courses, discussions and competitions. It was founded by Anthony Goldbloom and Ben Hamner. There is a very strong social following: 146 000 followers on Twitter, 20 705 on YouTube, 55 204 on Facebook and 93 766 followers on LinkedIn. However, users are just relying on social media to follow the website’s progress, there are 10.79 million visits recorded by SimilarWeb every month, only 22% of which are from the US (which is still over 2 million visits), followed by India, China, the UK and Brazil.

Design: The homepage doesn’t offer users many options, other than creating an account or signing in. Much like Facebook or LinkedIn, the idea is to be signed in at all time and to interact. In a way Kaggle is more of a social network than a job board. By clicking on Jobs at the top of the page, you bring up the listing, which displays the job title, the company, a logo, a location, the salary (if one is provided) and a publication date. There aren’t many job offers so filters aren’t all that necessary for this site. There are a few though: the salary, the experience, the role and keywords. Job offers are usually rather standardised. There are additional tools and sections, like the discussion board and competitions.

The job board objective: Kaggle has created a network of data scientists in order to promote and develop the industry.

Recruiter observations: Prices are online. Recruiters can create an account quite easily and every user has a personalised newsfeed.

Jobseeker observations: It is easy to create an account. You don’t need one to apply to job offers since you are redirected to a different site.

The job offers: There are currently 56 job offers. 7 of the offers provide a salary range and 22 of them are for jobs abroad.

Reactivity: --

Special features: The YouTube videos; the courses; the job alerts; the competitions; the discussions; the detailed information about everyone from the Kaggle team (including photos); the blog; the kernels.

Verdict: Kaggle has already created an impressive network of data scientists. With the demand for data specialists on the rise, the site might very well develop their job section further to cater for a growing need. For now, the jobs are limited but clear and the cost to advertise is low.
